Serge Gainsbourg’s house, tucked away on the Left Bank on the rue Verneuil, has become the kind of monument to a late singer that Jim Morrison’s grave in Père Lachaise aspired to be. Gainsbourg was famous, not least, as the lover of Brigitte Bardot and the husband of Jane Birkin, then the partner of the beautiful Bambou before he died in 1991 at the age of 62. Often drunk, often outrageous, once when he appeared on a French talk show with Whitney Houston he proclaimed for all the world to hear, in English, “I want to f—- her.” His daughter with Birkin, Charlotte Gainsbourg, has gone on to be a film star and singer in her own right.
